- NIH announces the availability of Recovery Act funds for:
- New Proposal Transmission Requirement: In order to track proposals for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), please add “(ARRA)” to the end of the title on the proposal transmittal form. This does not need to be added to the title on the cover page or anywhere else in the proposal.
- New NIH Reporting Requirement: NIH has started notifying PIs of its intent to consider funding for some proposals that have previously been reviewed but not funded. The stimulus (ARRA) has very special reporting requirements for tracking stimulus funding and posting it on a public site. Both the Office for Sponsored Programs (OSP) and Contracts and Grants (C&G) must be able to track funding from the stimulus package separately from other awards. Also, any internal commitments of matching funds from OVPR, UGARF, or any other unit, made during previous fiscal years must be reconfirmed, given the current fiscal situation.
If you hear from NIH (or other agency) about potential funding using money from the stimulus package, contact your grants administrator in OSP immediately (you can find them here).

New R01s submitted in FY08 and early FY09 already judged to be of scientific merit, but not funded due to lack of funds. Eligibility to be handled by programs, resubmission not required. NIH will look closely at existing proposals to determine if some of these 4-year projects could be completed and result in scientific achievements in 2 years. Approved applications will have an advantage but new R01s are possible. |
Supplementing existing grants to expand research to add training slots for new researchers or to promote a significant scientific advancement. SEE RELEVANT CENTERS AND INSTITUTES WEB SITES FOR DETAILS AND DEADLINES.

3. Challenge Grants (Updated 3/26) Providing 2-year funding (e.g., $500,000 per year for 2 years) for priority research. NIH is expected to issue RFAs in the next few weeks in “priority areas” determined by the Institutes and the director. The Institutes / Center’s strategic plans may be used to inform the priorities.

5. Research to Address the Heterogeneity in Autism Spectrum Disorders (Updated 3/26)
The NIH intends to commit approximately $57,000,000 to fund between 40-50 grants in response to this FOA and the companion announcements. It solicits applications for the following topic areas relevant to research on the heterogeneity of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD): Measurement development, Biomarkers/biological signatures, Immune and central nervous systems interactions, Genetics/genomics, Environmental Risk Factors, Model development, Treatment and intervention, and Services research. This FOA provides support for the R01 grant mechanism, which supports larger scale studies for which preliminary data exists and proof-of-principle has been established. KEY DATES

6. Biomedical Research Core Centers (Updated 4/20)
Invites applications to support hiring of newly-recruited faculty to develop research projects within the context of Biomedical Core Centers. Core Center Grants are institutional awards that provide support for shared resources for categorical research by investigators from different disciplines who provide a multidisciplinary approach to a joint research effort, or from the same discipline who focus on a common research problem. This program will provide funding to develop the resources necessary to conduct relevant research projects, including funds for hiring and providing appropriate start-up packages for newly-independent investigators. For this announcement, a Biomedical Core Center is defined as a community of multidisciplinary researchers focusing on areas of biomedical research relevant to NIH, such as centers, departments, programs, and/or trans-departmental collaborations or consortia. These awards are designed to enhance innovative programs of excellence by providing scientific and programmatic support for promising research faculty and their areas of research. Specifically for the purposes of this announcement, Core Center Grants are institutional awards that provide funding to hire, provide appropriate start-up packages, and develop research projects for newly independent investigators, with the goal of augmenting and expanding the institutions community of multidisciplinary researchers focusing on areas of biomedical research relevant to NIH. Approximately $100 million of ARRA funds will be obligated by September 30, 2010. The number of applications permitted varies among participating NIH Institutes and Centers. KEY DATES

8. Protection of Human Health by Immunology and Vaccines (Updated 6/5) Limited Competition: NCMHD Dissertation Research Award to Increase Diversity (R36) Invites new applications from single domestic institutions, or consortia of institutions, to participate in creating a network of human immunology profiling research groups. Applications are sought that propose to study human immune responses (1) following infection, (2) prior to and following vaccination against an infectious disease, or (3) prior to and following treatment with an immune adjuvant that targets a known innate immune receptor(s). The purpose of this FOA is to capitalize on recent advances in immune profiling to measure the diversity of human immune responses under a variety of conditions, using bioinformatic, multiplex, and/or systems biology approaches to study samples from well-characterized human cohorts and to measure aspects of the human transcriptome and/or proteome.

9. 2010 NIH Directors New Innovator Award Program (DP2) (Updated 8/31) Supports a small number of early stage investigators of exceptional creativity who propose bold and highly innovative new research approaches that have the potential to produce a major impact on broad, important problems in biomedical and behavioral research. The New Innovator Awards complement ongoing efforts by NIH and its Institutes and Centers to fund early-stage investigators through R01 grants. The NIH Directors New Innovator Award Program is a High-Risk Research initiative of Research Teams of the Future. This FOA will utilize the DP2 grant mechanism. Contingent upon the submission of a sufficient number of scientifically meritorious applications, NIH intends to commit at least $80 million in response to this FOA in fiscal year 2010; an anticipated minimum of 33 awards will be made in fiscal year 2010.

High-end Instrumentation Grant Funding Opportunity: encourages applications from groups of NIH-supported investigators to purchase a single major item of equipment to be used for biomedical research that costs at least $600,000. The maximum award is $8,000,000. Additionally, it is expected that the funds will be expended expeditiously, within 18-24 months from the date of award. Instruments in this category include, but are not limited to, structural and functional imaging systems, macromolecular NMR spectrometers, high-resolution mass spectrometers, cryoelectron microscopes and supercomputers.

$200 million: Academic Research Infrastructure Program - May 11, 2009 The Academic Research Infrastructure Program: Recovery and Reinvestment (ARI-R²) is designed to support 21st century research and research training infrastructure in our Nation's academic institutions and non-profit reserach organizations, such as research museums, research laboratories, and research consortia. ARI-R² will revitalize existing research facilities so that they provide next-generation research infrastructure and facilitate the integration of researchers with shared resources such as remote instruments and research platforms, data repositories, and national computing facilities. Research facilities are shared space where sponsored and/or unsponsored research activities and research training take place. They may be "bricks and mortar," mobile or virtual research space.

$15 million – Professional Science Master’s Degree Programs NSF 09-607 The Science Master's Program objectives are to prepare students for STEM careers in business, industry, government agencies, and non profit organizations. Its primary goal is to provide a well-trained U.S. STEM workforce for the changing needs of society and employers. Proposals may only be submitted by “U.S. academic institutions in the United States, its territories or possessions that grant the Master's degree in one or more STEM disciplines and have the capacity to provide education in additional skill areas, for example, by creating specially tailored courses in business, management, or public administration.” The Science Master's Program prepares graduate students for careers in business, industry, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies by providing them not only with a strong foundation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines, but also with research experiences, internship experiences, and the skills to succeed in those careers. The program is intended to catalyze the creation of institution-based efforts that can be sustained without additional federal funding. This program is also intended to encourage diversity in student participation so as to contribute to a broadly inclusive, well-trained science and engineering workforce. 21 awards, up to $700,000.
