About UGA
Sharps must be fully and safely contained within approved sharps containers in good condition. Sharps are anything that may cause punctures or cuts. This includes contaminated broken glass, glass pipettes with sharp points (broken or unbroken), needles (even with their cover on), scalpel blades, dissection blades, safety razors blades, butterfly catheters, etc. When a sharps container is ¾ full, close the box per the manufacturer’s instructions.
Please note: the Office of Biosafety no longer picks up sharps. For those of you who have had these items picked up by Biosafety in the past, you need to contact Larry Littleton with Stericycle HQ at 404-362-9313 ext. 7106 (llittleton@stericycle.com) to set up a disposal account. Coordinating a disposal program internally by building or by department is optional but should be cost effective.
For the complete definition of sharps and review of biomedical waste regulations see the State of Georgia solid waste section on biomedical waste.
