Susan R. Wessler
Professor of Botany and Genetics
Lamar Dodd Award
Susan Wesslers studies of transposable
elements (TEs) in corn helps unravel their function, their role
in mutations and their effects on plant evolution. The University
awarded her a creative research medal in 1991 and a research professorship
in 1994. Wesslers most notable discovery is a new class of
TEs, miniature inverted-repeat TEs (MITES), which serve as a molecular
device to further examine how TEs travel and drive evolution.
