Training of animal care staff and research personnel is a key component of a high quality animal care and use program. Such training activities, in fact, are specified in the Federal Animal Welfare Act Regulations and are an expectation of regulatory and accreditation bodies.
Staying Healthy While Working with Animals - information on biosafety and zoonotic disease concerns when working with animals
Available on-line at the Bioware portal. Simply log on using your MYid and password, go to “Training Home” under the training tab, and select Staying Healthy While Working with Animals.” This will launch the training module. The training module is followed by a short quiz to document your participation.
This course is required for those using vertebrate animals in research, instruction or outreach activities at the university. Staying Healthy while Working with Animals covers basic information on biosafety and zoonotic disease concerns when working with animals. Hazards commonly encountered while working with animals are reviewed. Zoonotic disease risks that one may be exposed to in the animal research environment are evaluated. Means of mitigating occupational health risks while working with research animals are presented. This training is a component of the occupational health and safety program for the research enterprise.
