Additional Research Support Services
Introduction
In addition to the research support services supported
by the Office of the Vice President for Research (described here), several other University of Georgia administrative areas provide
a variety of research support services. A number of them are highlighted
below.
Center for Ultrastructural Research
Barrow Hall
(706) 542-4080
caur@uga.edu
http://www.uga.edu/caur/
The Center for Ultrastructural Research provides a variety of microscopy-related services, including SEM, TEM, confocal, and conventional fluorescence microscopy. The Center also has advanced capabilities in image processing and image analysis.
Chemical and
Biological Sciences
Mass Spectrometry Facility
Chemistry Building
(706) 542-1802 or (706) 542-1883
drphillips@sunchem.chem.uga.edu
http://www.chem.uga.edu/research.html#ms
The Mass Spectrometry Facility is dedicated to providing
service with modern instrumentation that is suited for sample analysis
of small volatile mixtures via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry
to large biomolecules up to the hundreds of thousand Dalton range by
matrix-assisted laser desorption mass spectrometry. Also, a wide range
of compounds and mixtures can be analyzed by liquid chromatography-mass
spectrometry using an atmospheric pressure ionization interface.
Hazardous Materials Treatment Facility
(706) 369-5706
jreese@www.ps.uga.edu
http://www.ps.uga.edu
The UGA Hazardous Materials Program provides assistance
to users of hazardous chemicals in the proper collection, identification
and disposal of hazardous waste. Program elements include the registration
of users, training in the steps necessary to obtain waste disposal
services, and a Hazardous Materials Manual that contains written procedures.
Nuclear
Magnetic Resonance Facility
Chemistry Building
(706) 542-1502
Teng@sunchem.chem.uga.edu
The Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Facility of the Chemistry
Department houses three high field NMR spectrometers, operated at 250
MHz, 300 MHz and 400 MHz for 1H, respectively. A fully equipped 500
MHz NMR spectrometer will be installed by the end of 1997. The instruments
can perform a wide variety of multinuclear and multidimensional experiments
at desired temperatures for structural and dynamic studies of biological
molecules, natural products and synthetic compounds.
Poultry Diagnostic and Research Center
953 College Station Road
(706) 542-1904
jglisson@uga.cc.uga.edu
http://www.vet.uga.edu/pdrcinfo.html
The Poultry Diagnostic and Research Center offers a
variety of laboratory services involved in the isolation, detection,
identification, and characterization of infectious agents of poultry.
The most current methods are used with a variety of viruses, bacterial,
mycoplasmas, fungi, and protozoa.
Southeast
Poultry Research Laboratory
934 College Station Road
(706) 546-3433
a03dirsep@attmail.com
dswayne@uga.cc.uga.edu
http://sun.ars-grin.gov/ars/SoAtlantic/Athens/seprl/index.html
The Southeast Poultry Research Laboratory, adjacent
to the UGA Department of Avian Medicine on College Station Road, is
operated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research
Service. Six research projects in fundamental and applied sciences
cover five years of poultry health, including avian influenza, Newcastle
disease, Salmonella enteritidis infections, poult enteritis mortality
syndrome and avian mucosal immunology. The projects focus on development
of improved diagnostic methods and control strategies, including vaccines,
a better understanding of disease pathogenesis and immunology, and
enhanced utilization of molecular epidemiology to address national
and international poultry health issues.
An interdisciplinary team of scientists have expertise
in molecular biology, virology, microbiology, immunology, pathology,
vaccinology and veterinary medicine. Many of the scientists have adjunct
faculty appointments in the Departments of Poultry Science, Pathology,
Medical Microbiology, Avian Medicine and Microbiology.
University Computing and Networking Services
Computer Services Annex
(706) 542-3106
helpdesk@uga.cc.uga.edu
www.uga.edu/~ucns
University Computing and Networking Services (UCNS)
operates and supports a variety of computer facilities and the campuswide
data networking facilities that provide access to campus, national,
and international computer networks -- including the Internet. UCNS
also sponsors UGA as a member of Internet 2. UCNS is a service unit
under the administration of the Office of the Vice President for Academic
Affairs, through the Associate Vice President for Computing and Networking.
UCNS operates the central computing systems that support
the ARCHES electronic mail system, WebCT instructional system, GALIN
Libraries Online Catalog, statistical software packages for research
projects, and the University's central World Wide Web server, Anonymous
FTP server, and News server (Usenet News and ClariNet News). In addition,
UCNS operates and provides support for using the following specialized
facilities for focused research:
- Artificial Intelligence Laboratory
- Biological
Sciences Computing Resource
- Digital Media Studio
- Molecular Graphics Laboratory
- Scalable PowerParallel (SP/2) system
- SGI Power Challenge/Origin 2000 system
Doctoral-level staff members are part of the UCNS support
team for research in the Biological Sciences, Computational Chemistry,
Computational Physics, and High Performance Computing.
