DHHS Proposes Adding SARS-CoV and Chapare Virus to List of Select Agents and Toxins |

Abstract: |
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has indicated in Federal Register notices proposing the addition of SARS-CoV and Chapare virus to the list of HHS select agents and toxins found in 42 CFR 73.3. Once these agents are added to the Federal Register, their possession, use and storage will require approval by the CDC under the University of Georgia's select agent registration. Because Chapare virus is required to be managed in the BSL-4 environment, this agent can not be worked with at UGA and, hence, the addition to the select agent list should not be a concern for any of our facilities. The Office of Biosafety manages the
Athens campus registration. If you have any questions about the potential possession, use or storage of SARS-CoV at UGA facilities, please contact the Office of Biosafety at (706) 542-7265.
