Abstract:

The Biological Physics program supports projects in which the analytical and experimental tools of physics are applied to the study of problems originating in the living world. Both experimental and theoretical projects will be considered, although the main focus of the program is in the experimental area. Of particular interest are projects in which new experimental approaches are brought to bear on a well-identified problem. Awards cover a broad spectrum of physics approaches in biology, ranging from the physical principles and mechanisms at the single cell level such as cellular organization (e.g. cytoskeleton), energy metabolism, gene regulation and intracellular and intercellular communication, to collective behavior and evolution of complexity in life forms and living populations of organisms. The program funds individual investigators, although collaborative proposals between physicists and biologists are welcome.
